Just before....and forever...
I wonder...how did Jesus feel just before the moment He was placed in Mary's body as a baby? Knowing He was coming to this world to love...which would lead to death? I can't imagine His thoughts, feelings and knowledge. He knew He would be rejected, scorned and eventually killed...all because He loves us.
I know that I love my husband and children so much that I would give my life for them in a... heartbeat. No questions asked. But for people who would reject me? Scorn me? Plan my death? I don't think so.
That is love...amazing, incredible, selfless, ultimate sacrificing love. I pray that as we celebrate His birth, we remember His life...His death...and His love.
Hopefully, that love will change how we live...and love...forever. ♥~thl

Practice...or preach?
..."the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem..." "So they hurried off...." (Luke 2: 15)
I think we can all learn from the shepherds. They weren't fancy people. They weren't called by name in Scripture. They lived very humble, ordinary lives...to say the least.
But they did something so right....something we can learn from greatly. They heard the Good news of great joy from the angel and the praising from the host of angels...and they immediately went as they had been called to do.
They didn't sit around and discuss the theology of it. They didn't worry that they weren't good enough to follow God's direction for their lives. They simply went. They didn't hesitate. They followed God and literally became much closer to Christ.
But it didn't stop there. Verse 17 says after they had seen Him, they spread the word about Him! They heard. They went. They saw. They shared. What incredible servants they were!
Sometimes I fear we get so busy in life that we "preach" more than we "practice." Words come easily. Actions take more effort...time...life. More of "us" is required when we live it instead of only speak it.
How interesting....that the humble shepherds simply followed The Good Shepherd...literally...wholehe artedly...unselfishly. I think we can learn much from them. May we practice with our lives more than we preach from our lips. ♥~thl

Making room...
It has always been a thought I cannot dismiss. At the time of Jesus' birth, there was no convenient place for His arrival. Mary and Joseph did not have easy accomodations waiting for them. It was a choice by someone to make room for them. There was no force. No assumption. No reservations. They depended on God. God worked in the heart of an individual who loaned them a humble place in less than perfect conditions.
Somehow that seems so familiar to the way Jesus enters our lives. He doesn't just take up residence unless we choose to allow Him to do so. He doesn't force Himself into our lives. Our lives may be very ordinary, less than perfect and actually, quite substandard for a King to reside. But that's all He asks. We don't have to be perfect or "up to par." We simply have to be willing for Him to arrive.

What's Your Favorite?
I
remember the game well. We began playing
it when our children were younger, especially on long trips. It kept us occupied but we enjoyed learning
more about each other. The children
loved it then…and now. We named the game
“What’s Your Favorite?” It’s simple. Each person thinks of a question to ask all
the others about their favorites in a specific category. The more challenging the category is, the more
interesting the answers. The next person
selects a different category until everyone has a turn. Then it continues as long as desired. Responses are sometimes expected but often surprising
answers. There are no winners or
losers…we enjoy listening to one another…and casually compete for who can ask
the most challenging question.
Sometimes
our answers involved favorite animals, song, musical instrument, food, colors,
vacation moments, Bible verses, Bible characters, cars, etc.. Often the discussions that followed were
unexpected and cherished. I am amazed at
what our children ask or answer. I know
them quite well…but usually learned a pleasant surprise about them.
I
remember the song Maria sang about her favorite things in “The Sound of Music.” I loved singing along with her as I thought
about my favorites: classical music, teacups and saucers, baskets, Snoopy, sea
shells, mountains, a pink blanket I still have from college, white roses,
pictures of my children, lavender roses, Battenburg lace, horses, mountains,
Cherokee heritage, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Summer, piano, seafood, tennis,
the colors of white and pink and monograms.
Why
do we prefer some things better than others?
I really don’t know. I guess it
is somehow connected with our experiences, lifestyle or history. It may have no logical explanation. We just normally like some things better…due
to personal taste, identity and individuality.
We
simply favor some things over others. We
feel more comfortable around certain people.
We learn better in some situations. We think we look better in a certain
color or style. Something is usually
special to us because we find it enjoyable and beneficial.
What
about those days that aren’t so wonderful?
What if we face situations we don’t want to face? What if circumstances are not what we would
ever consider beneficial? What if
someone doesn’t prefer us, like us or care about us? What do we do when there is pain instead of
pleasure…harm instead of help…loneliness instead of love…disease instead of
delight…or loss instead of life? What if
we don’t have a choice…and we must endure the experience anyway? What’s so
great about facing something, someone or something that isn’t enjoyable or
beneficial? What happens then?
I
don’t think there is an easy answer. But
I think there is a choice in attitude. We
live in an imperfect world. Sin has
obviously entered and evil remains. Life
is not going to be perfect, fair, or understood. How can we be pleasant, positive and even
enjoy any “favorites” in such an environment?
I certainly agree…the shock, horror, concern and sadness in this life
are very discouraging and overwhelming.
The reality is that life is difficult…on so many levels. How do we possibly cling to any positive, passionate
or powerful attitudes in such a broken world?
As
the song says, “All I know is I’m not Home yet.” It is life-changing to know that this is not
the end of the story. It’s just the
beginning. When I am overwhelmed with
the wear, tear and care of this world, I remember that God is not finished
writing my story. The journey here on
earth is not without hope. We are never
alone for He is always with us. We may
be broken but He is a God of healing. We
may not understand the cruelty of life but we have Christ Who has overcome the
world. Our perspective can be one of
pessimism…or promise!
Philippians
4:8 (NIV) says: “Finally,
brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is
excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
This
doesn’t mean that we deny reality…or refuse to deal with the issues and cares
of life. It doesn’t mean that we have
some “Pollyanna” attitude that ignores heartache, health issues, horrible
tragedy or horrendous loss. But it does
mean that we have hope in Him and through Him.
Romans 12:12, (NIV), says “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
And that, my friends, is my very favorite perspective! ♥~thl

"Breath of Heaven"...and breathing...
It’s not the greatest
feeling. Waking up and struggling to
breathe is not the kind of moment anyone enjoys. For over ten years, my journey has included
dealing with asthma. Most of the time,
it is manageable. Some days…are a bit
more challenging. Today is one of them. I do not enjoy shortness of breath. I am not fond of feeling like concrete blocks
are sitting on my lungs. I cannot go
anywhere with medication to open my airways in case an asthma attack strikes. But I can choose my attitude about it!
I admit…sometimes it gets very
frustrating…even frightening…to not know if I can breathe the next breath. My family and I are very familiar with the “medication
luggage” I must take with me anytime we travel.
And it is not a small effort to make sure I have all the medications I
need “just in case.” But I can choose my
perception about the situation.
It is no coincidence that one of
my favorite Christmas songs is “Breath of Heaven.” Ever since I heard that song the very first
time, my heart is moved when I hear its message. From the perspective of Mary, the mother of
Jesus, the song reminds us of her humility, willingness, surrender and
acceptance of God’s plan for her life. I
am sure that she never expected this role.
I am sure she never imagined she would conceive, carry, deliver, raise
and love the Son of God…as His Mother. What
an honor! What a privilege! What a call from God, Himself. And yet, I am sure that calling was not
always easy. I am sure there were many
moments she didn’t understand the hows, whys, whats and whens in following God’s
plan for her life. But she followed Him…in
the middle of great joy, horrendous heartache, major responsibility and
tremendous trust.
So when my life presents its
challenges…outwardly, inwardly or unexpectantly…I know I am not alone. The same God who has healed the sick, raised
the dead, holds the brokenhearted, created the entire universe…and placed His
Son in the life and body of a young lady named Mary…has a plan for my
life. It won’t always be easy. It will always be worth it.
And my asthma? I can think of no other One to turn to than
the Breath of Heaven, Himself. He gave
me life. He will hold me through this
journey…including the struggles to breathe.
After all, breathing one moment without His presence isn’t possible
anyway….on any level. ♥~thl

Mountains...and Majesty....
I am a mountain girl! I grew up in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. Yes, I loved walking around barefoot...even on gravel surfaces...and still do. :) Yes, I still love playing in the dirt with my trees, plants and flowers. And yes, I am still a girly girl who loves dresses, Merle Norman cosmetics, hair spray and classical music.
Growing up in the mountains was wonderful. Everywhere I went, everything I did, every breath I took involved seeing those amazing mountains and breathing wonderful mountain air. Somehow those mountains continually reminded me of God's presence...with His loving arms around us at all times.
Moving to eastern Kentucky for college was great, too. I loved the foothills of the Bluegrass state. I loved the friendly people, Kentucky basketball, Smokey burgers and learning new things and meeting new people from all around the country. Becoming a Kentucky permanent resident during ministries and jobs was exciting, too. Living near the Lexington area has been a great experience with the gorgeous horse farms, (I love horses!!!), city shopping, country living, Kentucky cooking and loving folks who are new family to us! As I sit on our back deck, the view from our hill, into a valley and over to another hill is wonderful....cattle, tractors, farmers, crops, trees and occasional wildlife!
But I miss those mountains! I always loved them but I didn't realize how much I appreciated them until I no longer lived there. I missed those majestic reminders of "God's arms" protecting and directing my daily path. However, I have learned to realize that God is always there...even when I don't see the "reminders" from the mountains. No matter what is going on around us....or within us...God is there. We may not understand why horrible tragedies occur repeatedly...or why disease and pain seem to thrive in our lives...or why tremendous loss continues on multiple levels. But one thing I know...God is with us...always. Even in darkness, even in pain, even in confusion and uncertainty....He is with us. We may not see Him or understand the hows, whys and whens...but He is carrying us on this journey.
As I began thinking about what to write this morning after yet another senseless tragedy yesterday, a very specific Scripture passage came to mind immediately. Psalm 121: 1 > 8 reads: "I lift up my eyes to the hills--where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip--he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you--the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm--he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." Thank You, God, for carrying us, holding us and loving us every moment of this journey. Even in the hard times, You are God...our eternal Hope, Healer, Prince of Peace, Great Physician, Counselor and Mighty God. Forever, Majesty....You reign! ♥~thl

Following the Star...
I saw them! I saw several meteors falling tonight and it was a beautiful sight! I stood on the deck with a blanket wrapped around me and talked to God as I watched the brilliant lights shining above...the beautiful stars...and meteors racing across the sky. What an experience!
I couldn't help but think about the sight of that glorious star seen many years ago...and what those who witnessed its brilliance felt when they knew it was leading them to the Presence of a King....The King! He would also be called the "Bright and Morning Star" and the "Day Star." That had to be an incredible experience!
As I stood on the deck watching for the meteor shower, I noticed how much brighter the sky looked and how much easier it was to see around me. Again, I thought about the brilliant star that was not only seen so gloriously that wonderful night...but how it led others to Him!
John Hagee said "Just because you don’t see a way doesn’t mean God doesn’t have a way." I am sure that as others followed that star many years ago, they had to keep their main focus on the star...above all else. Otherwise, they would not find their way to the One whom they sought. They didn't have an address....or a GPS on their cell phones. They didn't know the street names and they couldn't consult Mapquest on their computers. They didn't know the way...without following the star!
Isn't that how we must find our way now? We really don't know what lies ahead. We don't know what tomorrow has in store. We don't know how to deal with all we face on this journey. But we do know that God is with us, guiding us each moment with His loving arms around us. He knows the way....for us...far better than we know ourselves. I thank God for directing my path each day in so many ways! I may not know what lies ahead...but as long as I am following The Star....The One Who lights the way for me each moment...I know am never alone, always loved....and will someday see Him...face to face. ♥~thl

It keeps happening...
It keeps happening. I don’t know why. I don’t know how. But I believe I know who is behind it.
Now before I explain more
details, I need to remind you that I am a very analytical person…always have
been…always will be. Since I was a very
small child, I was known to always ask “why?” continually…about
everything. Ask my Dad…my husband…my
children…and they will all tell you I always want to know why things happen…why
people do what they do, why some sports (*football*) are played a certain way…why
car engines make different sounds…why the sky is blue…why computers and cell
phones don’t always work correctly.
Well, you get the idea. I don’t
accept anything very easily without wondering “why.”
So imagine my response when it
began to happen. At first, I thought I
was just tired, or it was mere coincidence…or there was little chance it meant
anything significant. But the more it
occurred, the more I began to analyze it, of course. For months, it has been going on…at the most
interesting times. I admit that it has
been a very interesting year for our family.
I admit that my health took a few twists and turns I didn’t enjoy. I admit my family and I were quite
overwhelmed this year on multiple levels.
But why did this keep happening…without any of us seeking it?
It always seemed to happen when I
needed to hear it most…or in this case, see it most. Yet sometimes it just happened even if it
wasn’t a challenging day…or moment. But
obviously, He knew...what was on my heart and mind continually…hidden way below
the surface where no one else could possibly know.
I would sometimes look at my
phone and there it was…3:16. I would
look at the kitchen clock and it read 3:16.
I would grab something small at the store and guess what? Yes…the total was $3.16. Many times, I would wake up during the night
for no apparent reason and the clock on my nightstand showed 3:16. Or I would glance at a video or song clip and
the time duration would be…yes…somewhere around 3:16. You can imagine just how much my analytical
mind (and counseling/psychology degree) would kick in with this recurring
theme. I told myself I was a mere creature
of habit…that I just happened to be in the kitchen at the usual time or woke up
for no reason at the same time or subliminally sought it out. But I know better.
As a young child, my Dad worked
with my brothers and me consistently to teach us Scripture verses, Bible facts,
etc.. I can remember standing by the
fireplace reciting all the books of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation
without hesitation…around four or five years of age. I’m not sure I could do that very easily
today. So I learned John 3:16 very early in life. What did that have to do with the repeated
3:16 views now?Of course, I can’t know God’s complete reason or His answers for all that happens. But I do know this. Clinging to His love, His hope, His promises, His peace, His strength, His joy and His love has been the very reason my family and I survived this challenging year! In fact, we certainly would not want to repeat the events of this year…but I honestly believe that we have learned more about trusting Him, leaning on Him and learning about Him this year than ever before! So each reminder of the Truth, Hope and Love found in John 3:16 was a wonderful reminder of His promises, plan and purpose for our lives no matter what happened around us or within us. I pray I will always see 3:16 each day…whether it’s on a clock…a receipt…or always in my heart and mind. After all, it makes all the difference in this life...and the next one. ♥~thl “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

I never imagined...
I never imagined....that my life would turn out like this! I never imagined...that I would ever leave the Virginia mountains...that I would be accepted into various colleges and graduate from a private Christian college in eastern Kentucky with multiple degrees. I never imagined...I would meet a wonderful man from Ohio whom I would later marry...that I would become a minister's wife...that we would live in Kentucky the entire time (so far), and that we would have two precious children who would change our lives forever. I never imagined...the precious friends and "new family" we would meet on this journey. I never imagined...the love, excitement, lessons, opportunities, joys, challenges, losses, heartaches and pain we would endure. I never imagined...
I am sure many people feel the same way. Most of our lives have resulted in unexpected blessings and burdens...which influenced us in ways we never imagined.
John Hagee said..."You cannot have a problem that surprises God. God has a plan specifically for your life and it is a triumphant one!" I am amazed when I realize that He has known all along what would happen...and how He would bring victory into our story through it all!
Jeremiah 29: 11 > 13 says: "11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."
As God worked through so many "ordinary people" to do extraordinary works in their lives, I realize they probably didn't imagine what was ahead for them, either! The Message of Christmas is living proof that we cannot imagine...but He can! Thank You, God, for your amazing plan and purpose You bring into our lives....as only You can imagine! ♥~thl

One of those days...and still learning...
Yesterday was just "one of those days" that seemed to bring one challenge after another. No matter where I went or what I did, I just couldn't seem to accomplish anything easily or effectively. Those who know me best know that I am usually a list-making, multi-tasking, get it done right the first time, kind of person. But not yesterday. Actually, it's been that way for many yesterdays, especi...
ally recently.
Then I began thinking about other people whose lives didn't go quite the direction they expected, either. I think about a young woman who followed God...and whose life was never the same again. I think about her husband who accepted God's plan to care for her and their precious Son...unlike any parents had ever known before. I think about their travels, the response of their community, the uncertainties, the lack of understanding...and their faith. No matter what they faced, they held onto God...His purpose, His provision, His protection and His plan. I am sure their days...weeks...months...years were not easy...physically, emotionally, socially or cognitively. But they trusted Him...completely.
Dear God, may I trust You in the tough times as well as in the better times. May I focus on You most during this journey. I may not understand it...but I know You are there. May each day be spent honoring You...above all else. ♥~thl

"Prayer, Praise and Precious..."
“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is
steadfast; I will sing and make music. I
will praise You, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of You among the
peoples. For great is Your love,
reaching to the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let
Your glory be over all the earth.” (Psalm 58, 7, 9>11)
This has been one of my favorite passages
for decades. I just can’t read it
without sensing the very Presence of God and praising Him for His love,
faithfulness and majesty! Knowing that
the Creator of the universe, the Alpha and Omega, the great I Am, the Mighty
God…made me…loves me...saved me…and holds me…is absolutely overwhelming! It
goes way beyond words…
How do we respond to a loving, faithful and
incredible God? I just don’t know how to
ever praise Him enough. I am grateful,
humbled, amazed and moved beyond words for all He is, all He has done and all
that He promises us because of His tremendous love for us. But how do I ever thank Him, praise Him,
honor Him and glorify Him…enough?
Of course, I realize I can never do
enough. But what do I do to express my
gratitude? Well…I can pray…conversing
with Him all day long in every situation.
Some of my best memories during my college years include driving back
and forth from KY to VA and talking to Him. During the twenty-five mile trip
one way to the bank where I worked back home, I loved spending time with Him…listening,
talking, singing, thinking and simply sharing time with Him. I believe He loves it when we simply talk to
Him…like He is right there beside us.
After all, He is.
I can praise Him. Of course, this involves singing to Him in
Church services…but it goes so much further than that. I can adore Him, lifting my heart, mind,
voice and being to Him, anytime…day or night.
I can write to Him, for Him, about Him and because of Him. I can play piano to Him, for Him and with
Him. (That’s a little secret I will
share. Before I ever play any song, I always
dedicate each note, word and moment to Him before I begin.) I love singing to Him…publicly, privately and
even silently. Again, it’s incomplete if
it isn’t lifted entirely to Him.
I have noticed something, though, about
praising Him. I love it when we are in a
Church service and I see others lifting themselves collectively in worship to
Him! And yet…that made me think….intensely. I am certainly supportive of anyone who lifts
their voices, hearts, minds and hands to Him!
I believe God is very pleased when we honor Him with our entire
being. He is worthy of our praise…continually
and completely.
But as I consider the Church body lifting praise
to Him, it occurred to me that perhaps we need to be reminded of another
aspect. How can we lift ourselves to Him
without hearing His call to share with others for Him? Just as hands are lifted up to Him, they
should be extended outward to others before they are lowered back to our own
selves.
I am no scholar. I am no expert. But I do believe it is obvious that what we
do for others is an incredible form of praise to Him. As it used to be said in college, “we have to
walk the walk and not just talk the talk.”
If we truly praise Him, it must go beyond words. It requires action…as in the example of the
Good Samaritan or the passage in James 2: 14>17 regarding someone with a
need being told “Go, I wish you well, keep warm and well fed, but does nothing
about his physical needs, what good is it?”
I believe one of the highest forms of praise to God is when we honor Him
by sharing His love with others…continually.
I love PRAYING to Him. It is essential and it is an incredible
opportunity we should never take for granted.
I love PRAISING Him…daily...and not just on weekends with a Church
family. But I also love sharing Him with
others who are so PRECIOUS in His sight.
There are countless hurting hearts, wounded lives and shattered souls…who
live with us, work beside us, sit next to us in Church services, watch us from
the streets, internet, next door or simply call us their friends. They notice our fancy words, our bold claims,
our public actions…but they will always remember how we treat them..daily. I wonder…do we praise Him when we hear of
their brokenness…or their losses…or their illness…or their burdens? Or are we too busy “serving Him” that we don’t
have time to really share Him…with precious, valuable, hurting people?
Psalm 113: 3 says “From the rising of the
sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” May we praise Him each moment, every day,
continually, in prayer with Him, praise to Him and with precious others for Him!
